On Arthur Ashe Boulevard in Richmond, Virginia, J Ford The Artist’s mural captures the life and legacy of tennis legend, humanitarian, and activist Arthur Ashe in three powerful portraits.
The scene moves like a timeline from a determined young Arthur with big dreams, to Ashe in his prime breaking barriers on the court, to his later years as a respected leader and advocate for change.
Deep purple accents paired with white, give the piece a sense of dignity and balance. The purple carries a regal quality, symbolizing Ashe’s grace, honor and lasting influence, while the white provides contrast and focus, drawing the eye toward each stage of his journey. A faint tennis net weaves through the background tying together the transformation from child to champion to change-maker.
For Ford, this mural was more than a commission; it was an opportunity to bridge generations and inspire reflection on how one person’s talent, courage and commitment to justice can leave an enduring mark on the world. Completed in 2024, it has already become a celebrated landmark drawing visitors from around the globe who come to honor the man, his story and his impact.
Huge thanks to Brandon Hudson and the team at Marco’s Pizza for commissioning this mural and giving us the opportunity to bring their vision to life.
